Who are we?
The Trust is a major acute teaching hospital trust providing services for children and adults at Wythenshawe Hospital and Withington Community Hospital (the latter owned by Manchester Primary Care Trust). We provide district general hospital services and specialist tertiary services to our local community. Specialist tertiary services are also provided to patients from further afield and we serve a total population of 570,000.
What do we do?
We are recognised as a centre of clinical excellence, demonstrated by our mortality rates, which are among the lowest in the UK. Our fields of specialist expertise include cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer services breast care and stroke services.
Quality of Care
We are committed to ensuring our patients have the best possible hospital experience, and 95% of patients in the 2006 Healthcare Commission Inpatient Survey rated clinical care at Wythenshawe Hospital as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ More people are choosing to be treated here. In 2006/7, there were approximately 430,000 patient attendances at the Trust.
Clinical Excellence
We are also recognised in the region and nationally for the quality of our teaching, research and development. Our major research programmes focus on cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular, wound management and medical education.
Our People
We have 5,200 valued staff, including more than 600 employed by our Private Finance Initiative (PFI) partner South Manchester Healthcare Limited (SMHL).
Our Finances
The Trust has an income of approximately £280m per annum and in recent years has consistently demonstrated sound financial management and generated annual revenue surpluses on our income.
