UHSM provides the full range of general hospital services and is also recognised as a centre of excellence in the following fields of specialist expertise:
Burns and plastics
We are one of 15 burns centres in the UK, comprising a 28-bed dedicated ward with up to 5 high-dependency patient beds that enable ventilated patients to be managed within the unit. There is also a dedicated burns theatre within the hospital and rehabilitation for patients with major burns is provided within the unit.
Breast care
We provide breast cancer treatment and prevention at the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre which is a national training centre for breast cancer specialists. The centre co-ordinates the Greater Manchester Breast Screening programme, screening 50,000 women each year
Cancer services
We are one of three specialist cancer centres in Greater Manchester.
Cardiothoracic surgery
We are one of 6 transplant centres in the UK and have provided heart and lung transplants for more than 700 people over the last 20 years. We recently undertook a £22m expansion and improvement programme of the cardio-thoracic unit at Wythenshawe Hospital to enhance the facilities and services provided to patients. It includes a 26 bed critical care ward, a new outpatients unit and a cardiac investigations unit. A state of the art electrophysiology suite provides treatment for a range of heart problems.
Respiratory services
The North West Lung Centre has an international, as well as national reputation for respiratory medicine and offers a wide range of specialist services including respiratory medicine, cystic fibrosis and lung cancer. Specialists in the centre have conducted pioneering national research into asthma and allergy. We are also undertaking a £7m expansion of the Cystic Fibrosis Unit.
Maternity and paediatric services
We have become one of 8 centres of excellence following the review of services across the Greater Manchester region, and are extending our premises to offer a higher level of care to our patients.
