Postgraduate medicine

The Postgraduate Department is a key player in the Academy. UHSM is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK, and is responsible for 300 junior doctors in training posts and specialty doctors. The Postgraduate Department's role is to link in with their specialty tutors to ensure that the education and training they give is of the best possible quality. The postgraduate department has an extended community within the Trust made up of an ideal mix of expertise, allowing us to provide excellent careers advice and pastoral care.

Medical school is just the beginning. Doctors in the 21st century need to be versatile, competent in the most up-to-date techniques of their field, good communicators and to have an ability to adapt to future changes in the way that health care is delivered. Here at the Institute we prepare our graduate doctors for excellence.

Simulation tools and models are an established part of training and assessment

  • UHSM provides unique training opportunities in many aspects of heart/lung transplantation and adult cystic fibrosis, amongst others
  • UHSM is one of only two locations in the North West able to provide specialty training in burns treatment
  • Strong links have been set up between final year medical students and Foundation training, to be strengthened by the introduction of a new mentoring system to smooth the transition from study into the profession.

Foundation Programme

We currently have 72 Foundation doctors in training at UHSM.  There are 2 Foundation Programme Directors (FPD) and a Foundation Academic Lead.  Alongside the Directors the Foundation Programme Administrator (FPA) coordinates and administers the two-year generic training programme.  The Foundation Programme forms the bridge between medical school and specialist/general practice training.   Foundation trainees at UHSM will have the opportunity to gain experience in a series of placements in a variety of specialties and health care settings.  UHSM has 36 Foundation Year 1 and 36 Foundation Year 2 trainee doctors, this includes the 6 Foundation Academic trainees.  The specialties in which they train include Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, ICU Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Academic, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and General Practice.

Teaching

The Postgraduate Department is situated in the Education and Research Centre (ERC).  This state of the art building provides the ideal environment for educational session.

The Foundation teaching occurs every Tuesday afternoon for F1s and alternate Friday afternoon for F2s.

Foundation Year 1 (F1)

The first year of the Foundation Programme builds upon the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired in undergraduate training.  The learning objectives for this year are set by the General Medical Council.  In order to attain the full registration with the GMC, doctors must achieve specific competencies by the end of this year (see the GMC website for more details: www.gmc-uk.org).

Student Assistantship

The General Medical Council has stated in its document “Tomorrow Doctors 2009” that all medical students should undertake at least one Student Assistantship during the final year of their curriculum from the academic year 2011/12. The document states:

In the final year, students must use practical and clinical skills, rehearsing their eventual responsibilities as an F1 doctor. These must include making recommendations for the prescription of drugs and managing acutely ill patients under the supervision of a qualified doctor. This should take the form of one or more Student Assistantships in which a student, assisting a junior doctor and under supervision, undertakes most of the duties of an F1 doctor.”

Foundation Year 2 (F2)

The second year of the Foundation programme builds on the first year of training.  The F2 year mainly focuses on training in the assessment and management of the acutely ill patient.  Training also encompasses the generic professional skills applicable to all areas of medicine; team work, time management, communication and IT skills.  (ref: www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk)

The Foundation Programme at UHSM has been designed to reflect the Foundation curriculum (2010), this document can be viewed at www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk.  Each trainee will have to undertake a number of assessments and appraisals throughout their 2 year training programme.  The postgraduate department encourages all educational and clinical supervisors to attend the "Training for the Trainers" course or an equivalent course to update their training and supervisory skills.
