Learning and development
The UHSM Academy has been created to pioneer a vision of education in health care which breaks down divisions between professions. We are the only organisation in the UK to unify every aspect of health education – from specialised consultant training to basic fire safety courses - under one umbrella.
To strengthen this approach, the Learning & Development team joined the Academy on 1 April 2011, bringing with them achievements in NHSLA Standards at Level 3 for the management of induction, mandatory and medical devices training; successfully passing the recent assessment of the Investors in People award; the development of the Trust’s E-learning Zone; the delivery of the Manchester Business School Clinical Leadership Programme and the accomplishments of our NVQ delegates, to name but a few.
Louise Kitchener, Head of Learning and Development stated: “Now that our business as usual services are progressing well, in the future we aim to expand our leadership and management development programmes, develop our 'soft skills' courses, and streamline our offer so that in the coming years we have something for everyone."
- From June 13-17, twenty 14 year old students from Newall Green High School joined the UHSM Academy to experience a packed programme of activities and events such as an African experience; getting your foot on the career ladder; clinical skills training; UHSM “green” hospital and how to be a professional in the workplace; plus loads more. The sessions were delivered over the course of a week by teams from across the Trust, who kindly gave up their valuable time to share their experiences and knowledge to inspire the students. It was a fabulous opportunity for young people from our local community to experience the world of work in a healthcare setting and open their imaginations to a potential future career here at UHSM.
At the start of the week only one hand went up when the group were asked who was interested in a healthcare career. By the end of the week the number of hands in the air had swelled to fifteen, a clear sign of the impact made by the programme and a tribute to the dedication of our staff and the time they gave to be part of this success. This is only the start of things to come as the UHSM Academy continues to explore future opportunities to work with and inspire our local communities.
- Fifty Nurses commenced a Leadership and Management programme in October. The Programme is designed to assist this group to become more effective leaders and more able to deal with the challenging situations faced in their day to day role. It covers a range of topics including budgetary management, managing change and planning/decision making.
The programme, which continues through to December 2011 has received very positive feedback so far and in the final workshop participants will be expected to demonstrate the impact of the learning gained through changes they have made as clinical leaders.
- The NVQ Academy based at the Academy is accredited as a site of excellence for delivering practice-based training in health, support services and business administration. If you are accessing this site from within UHSM, please click here for more details.
- E-learning has taken off within UHSM, with the E-learning Zone receiving over 45,896 hits since its launch in August 2009. A Safeguarding Adults course is the latest addition, with further courses in fire, health & safety, medicines management and safer bloods due early spring 2011.
Information about all of our courses can be found on the Learning & Development intranet pages under Training. To contact the L&D department please email learninganddevelopmentteam@uhsm.nhs.uk
