The consultant surgeons deal with all general surgical problems in addition to their specialist areas and work within a team sharing junior staff. There is an active research portfolio within the department, focussing on areas of pelvic floor and upper gastrointestinal research.

The department operates a ‘Consultant of the Week’ system whereby a nominated surgeon is available and responsible for acute surgical services each week. The Consultant of the week can also be contacted for clinical advice via their secretaries.
