South Manchester governors

John Churchill

"I was born in and have lived around south Manchester all my life, and I have spent a considerable amount of time at Wythenshawe Hospital as a patient. Having always received excellent care, I think it is time to give something back to the hospital, As I cannot make a financial contribution, I offer my time and dedication, both of which I have plenty of. I was a designer with Tesco, so I have technical skills that I can use. I was a licence holder in the wine trade, and I currently hold an NVQ fundraisers certificate. I am on the committees for Royal Oak/Baguley tenants & residents, and Wythenshawe Community Farm."

Sidney Travers

"I am a retired local solicitor who graduated from Manchester University in 1952. I then worked for many years in local general practices and subsequently served as Chairman of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal for 20 years and also as Immigration, Asylum & Human Rights Adjudicator/Judge for 12 years. My wife and I have lived in Northenden continuously since our marriage in 1958 and have throughout this period been registered as patients of the Northenden Group Practice and its predecessors on Palatine Road. I have a good knowledge of the structures of the NHS and its current issues, both local and national."

Wendy Mannion

“I have lived in Manchester for forty eight years, been married for 25 years and have three lovely children aged 14, 21, 23. Currently I work in retail dealing with different cultures and all ages. For ten years I have volunteered for a Junior School in Didsbury, doing reading, writing and art projects with children.

Working in Customer Service, I would like to think I would make a real difference to the way the hospital works for the people, and the hospital staff by going forward listening and making the right choices, learning from the past.”

David Hird

"My working background before retirement was in Local Government. Whilst that is not a parallel experience to the NHS there are some similarities within Accountability and other procedures.

During the first term I observed and were able to comment on the day to day workings of the Hospital. This was possible through a structure set up by the Trust which enables Governors to make a contribution but avoiding interference in the operation of the Hospital."

Steve Cook

"My father was treated here when he came to the end of his life. He received the most professional treatment and was respected throughout his time here. I now feel that I would like to give something back and joining the team is an ideal opportunity to repay something.

Having spent time here over the years, I feel I have some insight into the way UHSM ticks. I relish the opportunity to help our community grow and improve even more.”
