Staff governors

Nicola Brennan - Nursing & Midwifery

"I live in Glossop, but I travel the distance to UHSM because I choose to work at a hospital that delivers superb care. I have been employed by the NHS for 17 years, firstly as a Care Assistant and now as a Band 5 Staff Nurse.

I am passionate about excellent patient care and a safe, clean environment in which we can deliver this. I have experienced most working areas at UHSM, and I have listened to concerns and misinterpretations about the future of UHSM and the NHS. I aim to be the signpost that is needed to allow our voice as nurses to be heard, but also in return deliver accurate information.”

Carol Winter - Other Clinical

"I started my career as an engineer’s apprentice, and then trained as a dental technician which led to my current role as Principal Maxillofacial Prosthetist at UHSM."

"I'm a member of the Council of the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists & Technologists, UHSM's Macmillan Patient User Partnership Group & the Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics Network. I have recently undertaken a Clinical Leadership programme for Healthcare Scientists where I gained a Special Recognition Award. I am passionate about ensuring that all groups of staff have a voice at Board level."

Colin Owen - Non-Clinical

"I am delighted to have represented my colleagues as non-clinical staff governor for the past 3 years. I have worked for UHSM for 28 years in various roles."

"I feel I can continue to offer the experience, energy and the voice to non-clinical staff. Having served as a governor on the membership and open day committees, I can represent them both in a critical and supporting role within the council."

Andrew Davey - Atkins & Sodexo

"I have worked for UHSM and Aktins since 1990. Until four years ago, I was employed as a Painter and Decorator. The opportunity arose to attend college to enhance my skills and learn another trade. I took advantage of this opportunity. I attended Stockport College gaining an NVQ 1 and 2 in Joinery. I then joined the joinery department.

I have been an inpatient and appreciate how hard staff work to provide the best possible service. I am passionate about working for the hospital and serving the patients, and feel able to commit time and energy regularly to the work of a Governor."

Michael Connolly - Nursing & Midwifery

"In a Foundation Trust, the senior decision makers on the board have to answer questions and share decisions about the future with governors. It is an attempt to make the people running the hospital accountable to the community it serves.

We have to avoid managing the hospital ourselves, but we must find ways to feed the insights, hopes and frustrations of patients, public and staff into the decisions and priorities of the board. We’ve made some progress and I think such partnership working is worth the effort."

Clifford Clinkard - Volunteers

"I have been a Hospital Volunteer for 7 years following my heart bypass. I was grateful for the treatment I received at UHSM. I speak to Cardiac patients prior to their operation offering reassurance to them and their families. Recently I started attending clinics in the North West Heart Centre at  offering similar support to outpatients.

My role includes co-ordinating a team of 20 Ward visitors, ensuring new volunteers are trained, organising the rotas and an annual Seminar attended by staff from the Cardiac department. I am the Patient representative at the monthly Cardio Thoracic Directorate meetings."

Dr Emma Hurley - Medical & Dental

"I have extensive clinical experience both as a physician and a radiologist over the last 26 years. In a target driven environment of continuous change, our Trust faces a huge challenge in delivering a timely and appropriate service not only to our local community but also to the large patient base of our nationally recognised specialist units.

In order to achieve this, the Trust Board needs experienced, sensible input from its staff governors, in particular the medical staff. I welcome the opportunity to be your ambassador in that role."
