CPA and underlying diseases

Most patients with CPA have an underlying lung disease. The most common underlying diseases include:

  • Pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Atypical mycobacterial pulmonary infection
  • Stage III fibrocystic pulmonary sarcoidosis
  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA)
  • A history of pneumothorax
  • A history of successfully treated lung cancer
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema
  • Less common underlying diseases include asthma, prior severe pneumonia, histoplasmosis, pulmonary cysts, ankylosing spondylitis, bronchiectasis, rheumatoid pulmonary nodules, and silicosis.
