UHSM's new Women’s Health Unit opens
“I am really delighted to declare the new unit open and see that, despite the cut-backs in public spending, this hospital is making women’s health a top priority.”

Staff from the breast and gynaecology specialties at UHSM’s Wythenshawe Hospital were joined on Tuesday (9 March) by the BBC’s Jenni Murray to officially open a new Women’s Health Unit.
Jenni Murray, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, was treated by UHSM's consultant breast surgeon Professor Nigel Bundred and she continues in her support for the Trust. The new Women’s health Unit replaces the former women’s ward which was located in the Maternity Unit and is part of the Trust’s multi-million pound refurbishment and expansion to its Women’s & Maternity Centre.
The Women’s Health Unit will contain: a 26-bed ward for breast and gynaecological patients; two pre-op assessment areas, one for breast and one for gynaecology; a Gynaecological Assessment Unit (for early pregnancy problems and making clinical decisions); and a Women’s Health Suite which will see outpatients and do minor procedures e.g. colposcopy.
Jenni, who is a presenter on BBC Radio 4’s 'Women’s Hour', officially opened the new Unit and said: “I know first hand how important it is for women to be cared for in the company of other women, and to have privacy and a good environment in which to recover."
Joanne Robson, General Manager for Women’s & Children’s Services at UHSM says: “I am absolutely delighted with the opening of our new Women’s Health Unit which will provide extremely important services to our female patients and is evidence of the progress we are making in our drive to expand and improve services for women and children. I’d like to thank all the fantastic staff involved in making this happen.”
