“The year at UHSM has increased my confidence and abilities dramatically. The hospital put a lot of trust in me by giving me a real responsibility and variety in my work, which has just been great. I’d like to say thank you to everyone that has supported and worked with me."

Declan Brady, 21, has been working with UHSM staff at Wythenshawe Hospital in the development of its new Admissions Lounge. For the last 14 months Declan, who is studying Building Surveying at the University of Salford, has been project managing new developments during his year out in the industry.

As part of a team of three, Declan has being helping to design, contract and manage the building of the Trust’s new £700K Admissions Lounge which will help reduce the amount of time patients spend in hospital before being admitted for surgery.

At present many patients come in the day before their surgery and stay over night. The new lounge will mean that people can come in on the day of their operation, get prepared, have consultations with their consultant and team and walk to theatre, all of which frees up essential bed space. The lounge is expected to see approximately 60 patients go through on a daily basis and is due for completion in November this year.

Paul Featherstone, Director of Estates & Facilities, explains: “This new facility is going to have a really positive affect on managing our bed capacity and improving the patient experience here at UHSM. Declan has worked extremely hard for the Trust during his "year-out" placement and has delivered the project to a high standard. He has applied himself very well and hasn’t been daunted by such a big project. Declan's time with the Trust will hopefully stand him in good stead as he completes the final year of his degree.”

UHSM is fully accredited as a training organisation by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. The Trust takes on one student every year and is delighted with the calibre of students that the University of Salford clearly has to offer.
