Success for UHSM at Transplant Games

The British Transplant Games in Bath were hugely successful for our team of 11 heart and lung transplant recipients from UHSM.

A small team, but a big haul of medals! Overall - 11 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze were won. The newest team member, heart recipient Sky Fielding aged 17, won gold in archery and silver in the ten pin bowling. Whilst Neil MacDonald, who is in his 20th year of attending the games came away with two gold and two bronze.

Laura White was presented with the Lions - Vicktrex Ludorum Trophy for the most outstanding female performance in her age category. Laura won a Volleyball gold, a gold in the shot put, and silver in table tennis and the javelin.

Each year UHSM has a team entering into the games, and we have a number of athletes who are then selected to represent Great Britain in the World Games – quite an honour.

The spirit of the games is to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to participate, and the most watched event is the 25 yards race for the under 5’s all of whom have undergone a transplant. It is very emotional.

It is a 4 day event where the competition can be fierce, but the most important part is the fact that all the athletes are there through the kindness of a donor – without this gift of life they would simply not be there.

Please sign up and put your name on the donor register. This can be done online at www.uktransplant.org.uk.
