
UHSM pioneer is awarded CBE in New Year's Honours

A former employee of UHSM has been awarded a CBE for services to healthcare in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.
Until her retirement last year year, Mary Dodd was a Consultant Physiotherapist at UHSM. She has cared for patients with CF since the 1960s. Initially she worked with infants and children. In 1982, she was instrumental in the establishment and development of the Manchester Adult Centre, which currently cares for 350 adults from the North West. She has pursued a clinical career and her extensive experience has led directly to clinically based research which has included the role of exercise, effects of nebuliser therapy, cross infection, oxygen, urinary incontinence and musculoskeletal problems.. She has been a Member of Working Parties for several Clinical Guidelines for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and The British Thoracic Society.
In 2001 Mary was awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for her research and education activities and in 2006 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (DSc) from Manchester Metropolitan University for her research into exercise in cystic fibrosis.
Mary who is 65 and lives in Altrincham, says she receives the award on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Unit and UHSM. " This is a great honour and I feel truly humbled to have been put forward for it."
