Seminar to get cancer patients back into work
“We hope to run seminars like this again in the future as the turnout was tremendous. The feedback we received was incredibly positive feedback and I’d also like to thank our exhibitors including ACAS, Access to work, Pro-ability, Jobcentre plus, Beechwood Cancer Care, UHSM’s Neil Cliffe Centre, One Education, and Simply Health.”

Manager, Macmillan Centre
The Macmillan Information and Support Centre based at UHSM has recently hosted a unique seminar that focused on supporting cancer patients back into work.
The event, which was organised along with the Shaw Trust based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, looked at how many people are living with and beyond cancer and returning to the workplace, employers obligations, support groups that can help people get back in to work and cancer patients spoke about their own experiences.
The seminar was a huge success and attended by representatives from over fifty employers from across the North West who were also joined by UHSM’s Human Resources and Occupational Health teams department.
Managing an employee with cancer to get back to work can be a complex and lengthy process, and it is really important that the correct policies and procedures are followed by employers. Seminars like this will help employers get it right, while introducing them to support mechanisms and organisations that are in place to help them and help their employees.
The Macmillan Information and Support Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital offers a wide range of information and can help the public, patients and Trust staff who want to now more about cancer treatments, affects, diagnosis, getting back to work and much more. The team offer counselling, job and benefits advice and can direct people to other services both in the hospital and wider community. The office is open weekdays from 10am - 4pm and no appointment necessary. You can reach the team by calling phone on 0161 291 4876 or email macmillan.info@uhsm.nhs.uk.
