UHSM welcomes Trafford Mums-to-be

“"The transfer of maternity services from Trafford Hospital this week is the culmination of 18 months of planning. We already have around 100 Trafford women booked to have their babies at Wythenshawe Hospital during February, March and April. We're really looking forward to welcoming them all. We don't want any mums-to-be in Trafford to be anxious about their care, so I'd urge them to get in touch with our staff if they have any questions at all about having their baby at Wythenshawe Hospital."
Joanne Robson,
General Manager for Women's & Children's Services

As part of the implementation of ‘Making it Better’ - a Greater Manchester wide scheme to improve standards of care and provide care closer to home for mums-to-be and families - UHSM is becoming one of eight ‘super centres’ for maternity and paediatrics across Greater Manchester.

UHSM extends a warm welcome to all expectant women from Trafford. Our staff are doing everything possible to support them over the transitional period and a group of the first Trafford Mum’s due to have their babies at UHSM were invited in for lunch with staff and a tour of the Maternity Dept.

Helen Humphries from Sale (above left) is expecting her first baby. She says, "I know that a lot of people have been working really hard to make sure the transition from Trafford to Wythenshawe Hospital goes smoothly. From what I've seen today, I'm sure we'll all be really well looked after, so I don't have any concerns. The staff at Wythenshawe are a really nice team and have gone to great lengths to make Trafford women feel very welcome and make sure we're well cared for."

Anyone booked to have their baby at UHSM can call 0161 291 2942 to speak to a midwife.

Work to create the new UHSM ‘super centre’ for women and children is well underway:

  • A new maternity triage facility for women in the early stages of labour will open in March
  • Two new water birth rooms have already opened
  • Work to upgrade to the Antenatal Clinic will be completed over the coming months
  • Creation of a new Midwife-Led Unit will start in March and, from September, it will provide an alternative level of care for women with low-risk pregnancies, offering natural births to women in a ‘home from home’ environment in brand new en-suite birthing rooms with water pools
  • Refurbishment of the Delivery Suite will commence in September.
