Haematology

We provide a comprehensive clinical and analytical service to help the diagnosis of many disorders including infection, anaemia, leukaemia, malignancy and bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Tests include counting the number of red cells, white cells and platelets in the blood, looking at cells under the microscope, seeing how quickly the patient’s plasma forms a clot, blood grouping and the selection of blood for transfusion.

Haematology outpatient clinics are held mainly at Wythenshawe Hospital although there is a clinic once a fortnight at Withington Community Hospital.

Patients who need urgent consultation, blood tests or procedures can be given appointments to see a doctor at the Haematology Day Unit by arrangement with the Haematology Sister.

The Blood Transfusion laboratory supports surgery, trauma, maternity, bleeding disorders and cancer therapy with blood, blood products and clinical advice.

The Anticoagulation and Haematology Research Unit monitor patients on anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin) and carries out research in this area. Anticoagulant clinic details can be found here.
