Pathology
The department comprises of four main specialities:
- Cellular Pathology (Histology, Cytology, Mortuary) processes tissue samples, fluids and aspirates for microscopical diagnosis of disease.
- Biochemistry studies chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to disease, mostly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood or urine. Comprehensive 24 hour service, including clinical advice, to all clinical specialties within Health and Social Services and a routine service for local General Practitioners.
- Haematology provides a comprehensive clinical and analytical service to aid the diagnosis of many disorders including infection, anaemia, leukaemia, malignancy and bleeding disorders. Supports surgery, trauma, bleeding disorders and cancer therapy with blood, blood products and clinical advice.
- Microbiology provides a wide range of tests for the diagnosis and management of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections.
