Cancer Services

“We provide specialist lung cancer surgery and chemotherapy to patients across the Greater Manchester & Cheshire Cancer Network. We also provide tertiary plastic surgery services to cancer patients across Greater Manchester and beyond."
“We receive approximately 3500 GP referrals for suspected cancer and treat approximately 1,600 new cancers per annum."

"Since 2008, we have opened the Macmillan Information Centre, developed a clinical psychology service and recruited three cancer specialist nurse posts to work exclusively with our cancer patients and their families."

UHSM is one of three Associate Cancer Centres within Greater Manchester & Cheshire Cancer Network (GMCCN). We provide diagnostic and treatment services to the local South Manchester population for the following cancer types:

  • Breast
  • Colorectal
  • Dermatology
  • Gynaecology
  • Haematology
  • Head & Neck
  • Lung
  • Oesophago-gastric
  • Urology

Our multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings provide a forum for diagnosis and treatment planning discussions by a panel of experts. The make up of the MDT is described within each tumour specific webpage. In addition, we provide tertiary breast services, including reconstruction to patients across Greater Manchester and beyond.

Associate Cancer Centre

As an Associate Cancer Centre, we provide specialist diagnostic services and surgery and host specialist multi-disciplinary team discussion for the following populations:
Gynaecology – South Manchester, Stockport, East & Central Cheshire.
Head & Neck – South Manchester, Stockport, Trafford (ENT only), Macclesfield (Maxillo-Facial only) and Wigan (ENT only).
Oesophago-Gastric – South Manchester, Trafford and Macclesfield. In line with the GMCCN Improving Outcomes Guidance Action Plan, we will also provide this service to the population of Stockport at a future date.
Urology – South Manchester, Central Cheshire and Trafford. Specialist Multi-disciplinary team discussion is hosted by UHSM, via video link, for the populations of Stockport, East Cheshire and Tameside although the specialist surgery for these patients is provided at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

We have close links with colleagues in Primary Care Trusts and with cancer services teams within neighbouring trusts across GMCCN, including Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which provides the majority of chemotherapy treatments and all radiotherapy treatments for our patients.

Sarcoma services are not provided at UHSM. This service is provided by the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS), based at Christie Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

Brain and Central Nervous System services are not provided at UHSM.  Any such cancers identified at UHSM are referred to Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (tel. 0161 789 7373).

Children’s Cancer services are provided by Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s Hospital (currently based at the Pendlebury Hospital site, tel. 0161 794 4696).

Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Service
Macmillan Cancer Support very generously donated funds to build and develop a Cancer Information and Support Service at UHSM – including a brand new, purpose built Cancer Information and Support Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital. This Service offers information and support to anyone affected by cancer.
