Maternity
“An independent health watchdog has confirmed that our maternity unit is one of the safest in the country. Only 17 other maternity units in England have gained the highest possible safety rating of level 3 in the Clinical Negligence Schemes for Trusts (CNST) assessment. This independent inspection in maternity units is clear evidence that we are delivering best practice and improving care for women and babies.”
Carol Murphy, Maternity Unit Manager UHSM

Supervisors of Midwives
Supervisors of midwives are experienced practising midwives who have undertaken additional education and training to support guide and supervise midwives. Every midwife must have a named supervisor of midwives and meet with them at least once a year. They develop and maintain safe practice to ensure protection of you, your baby and family. They meet regularly with midwives and ensure a high standard of care is provided. They give guidance and support to both midwives and you. They support the practice of midwives and ensure that the care offered is right for you, is given in the right place, by the right person and that it will benefit you and your baby.
Whilst the supervisor will support the midwife in the care she gives you, the supervisor can additionally help you by listening and advocating on concerns about the care you have received from your midwife, talking to your midwife if you are concerned or unhappy, and supporting & advising you and your midwife in your care choices, for example place of birth.
They are available 24 hours a day every day of the year. Please call 0161 291 2965 during office hours or out hours (for emergencies only) call 0161 291 2945. You can access further advice and information at advice@nmc-uk.org.
