Public Transport

TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester) have a Traveline team, which can provide information about all bus, train and tram services in the Greater Manchester area, including timetables, leaflets and maps. Phone Traveline 0871 200 22 33 (calls cost 10p a minute from landlines, mobile and landline networks may charge an additional tariff. Lines are open 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).

TfGM's hospital website tells you how to access all hospitals in Greater Manchester by public transport. You will find maps of the hospitals, locations of any bus stops, rail stations or tram stops close to the hospitals, and it also displays route maps of services to and from the hospitals, which you can download and print. The bus services for UHSM document can be downloaded here.

By 2016, the new Airport Metrolink line will become operational, and the Roundthorn stop will be located a short walk from the hospital - see here for the details. For the latest updates on the progress of the new line, please visit the Metrolink website.

Information Points in Greater Manchester: TfGM Travelshops will help you to plan your journey and provide details of services and times. Travelshops are found at most bus stations in Greater Manchester.

Infopoint Freephone Telephone Units

Infopoint units are auto-dialling telephone kiosks which allow the user to make free calls to any of the services featured on the unit. Just lift the handset, wait for the dial tone, then press the button for the required service and wait for the connection to be made.

You can access the following services:

  • Taxi Service
  • Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS)
  • NHS Direct
  • Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE)
  • Traintracker
  • Smoking Cessation

The units can be found at the following locations within the hospital:

  • A&E
  • Main Entrance
  • Outpatients
  • Nightingale Centre
  • Maternity
  • Antenatal

Help with Fares

If you are on a low income, receive benefits and need to travel to hospital to receive NHS treatment, you may be entitled to help with the cost. Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) refunds require you to complete a HC1 form available from the hospital’s Cashier’s Office in the Out Patients Department (West Entrance), Job Centre Plus or local Post Office.  You will need to take current proof of benefit entitlement with you and retain your valid travel tickets as proof.  To check whether you may be eligible please contact the Wythenshawe Hospital Cashier’s Office, Tel: 0161 291 2361 or 0161 291 2117 or 0161 291 2027 who will be able to advise you before you travel. You can also check full details in the HC11 booklet.

Concessionary Travel

The TfGM leaflet ‘Finding out about...Public transport to hospitals in Greater Manchester’ explains that a concessionary travel pass that allows people aged 60 or over, under 16, qualifying disabled people and those with learning difficulties to free travel on local buses in England between 9.30am and 11pm on weekdays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

TfGM provide Travel Vouchers for people who are not able to use ordinary buses, trains or Metrolink and who have serious walking difficulties or are registered blind. For more information about concessionary or free travel phone 0161 244 1050.

Travel Vouchers are available for blind people and people with walking difficulties who are not able to use ordinary buses. They can be used to pay for taxis and for travel on accessible bus services such as Ring & Ride and community transport.
