Sunil Thacker
Patient, Acute ward.
“I owe so much to the staff and the hospital. I honestly feel I’m lucky to be alive.”
“I am now on long-term antibiotics and I have to be careful. I am starting to build my strength up and get back into sport, which I love. I owe so much to the staff and the hospital. I honestly feel that I’m lucky to be alive.”
Sunil Thacker was referred to UHSM when he was struck with a mystery illness.
“It all started about five years ago when I couldn’t seem to shift a cough, it just wouldn't go away. I had always been really active and loved playing sport, but I went from being fighting fit and active to being barely able to walk, losing weight and wanting to sleep all the time. I am a young man but I didn't have enough energy to get to work, let alone carry out my job as a chemist.
“We tried all sorts of things to help like changing my diet, cutting down my hours at work and getting as much sunlight as possible but nothing seemed to work. In 2008, I was referred to Wythenshawe Hospital and everything changed. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and put on a clinical trial. I had lots of tests and medicines, and doctors discovered that I had two quite rare infections – one fungal and one caused by bacteria.”
