Transplant Centre
The Transplant Centre is one of only five national heart and lung transplant units in the UK, with a patient catchment area of over six million.
Outpatients
This is a purpose built, fully suited department which is designed so that transplant recipients may have most of their routine tests performed within the unit. This includes 3 consultation rooms, 2 clinic rooms and a biopsy suite. The Transplant Secretary and Clerk are based within the department. The department is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm.
Jim Quick Ward
This 16 bedded ward was developed specifically for the use of pre and post transplant care. It comprises 3 four-bed bays, one of which provides a high dependency facility. There are 4 on suite single rooms which are utilised by patients soon after transplant and for those who need some degree of barrier nursing. Each bed has its own patient line, television and payphone. The ward is situated above the transplant outpatients with access by stairs and lift.
Intensive Care
There are five individual Intensive Care units where patients receive medical support after transplant. Relative accommodation is available in either the Unit's bedsits or the bungalows.
Convalescent Bungalows
We have two bungalows in the hospital grounds, each of which is divided into two apartments. These serve as a half way house for recipients between ward and full discharge home. They are available for patients needing follow up care such as I.V therapy. All patients must have a responsible carer or relative to stay with them in the bungalows. Each bungalow has a twin bedroom, a full cooking facility, a sitting/dining room and bathroom with a shower and toilet.
Bedsits
There are five bed-sitting rooms attached to the transplant outpatient department. These can be used for patients wishing to come overnight prior to an outpatients appointment, or for patients having consecutive day case visits, patients participating in investigational studies who may need to stay overnight, or relatives in the immediate post-op phase.
Social Worker
The Transplant Social Worker is available three days a week and is present in clinic for consultations. However, private consultations can be arranged away from the department (including home visits) if required. There is also a waiting list support group which meets every fortnight.
Gym / Physio
All transplant recipients are welcome to attend for physio and rehab in the mornings. This is arranged through the Transplant Physiotherapist. Alternatively a referral can be made to your local physiotherapy department.
