Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I wait for my procedure?

Goverment guidelines state that nobody should wait more than 18 weeks from first seeking care of their problem to definitive treatment (which may include surgery). At Wythenshawe the waiting time varies depending on your particular problem, but it very unusual to wait for more than 12 weeks. The waiting time can be affected by emergencies and cancellations so any wait times given are an approximation.

What will happen if I don't have the operation?

If your operation is cancelled on the day of your surgery or on the day that you are due to be admitted then we will reschedule your surgery within 28 days. If your surgeon has a suitable operating slot within a few days then we would keep you in hospital, but if however the next available date is not for a week or more then you would be sent home and asked to return at a later date.

Will my body reject my new valve?

No - artificial valves are inert and have no blood supply so the body will not reject them.

What should I bring into hospital?

  • Non slip slippers or sandals, that allow for slightly swollen feet after the operation.
  • For female patients a sports or supportive bra to wear post operatively, to prevent strain on the chest wound.
  • Pyjamas with shorts for men, loose front opening nighties, or pyjamas for female patients.
  • Bottled water (if you prefer) and cordial drinks, we encourage patients to drink over a litre of water per day.
  • Money, in the form of pound coins to access the over bed televisions and phones. As well as the portable ward phone and money for the trolley shop which sells newspapers.
  • Don't forget the usual tablets that you've been taking. You may still need them after the operation, especially the cholesterol reducing tablets.
