Ben Bridgewater trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in Paddington and then in cardiac surgery in Manchester and at Green Lane Hospital Auckland. Since being appointed as a consultant in 1998 he has developed a specialist interest in Mitral valve surgery (along with Tim Hooper). In addition to his operative commitments Ben is heavily involved with initaives to collect, publish and improve caradic surgical outcomes through various roles with the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB and Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons, and The National Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research. Professor Nizar Yonan is the Transplant Director and a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He is the director of the Transplant Research Laboratory, which is a centre of excellence for translational research, leading to an average of 20 international presentations per year and over 200 peer-reviewed publications in the last 10 years. During his time at the transplant centre and research lab, he has contributed to over 150 peer-reviewed experimental and review articles. He reviews regularly for several journals, and he is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. He is a member of the reviewing panel for the Society of Cardiothoracic surgery for Great Britain and Ireland, an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a member of the cardiac and pulmonary councils for the International Society for Heart and lung transplantation and an invited advisor for the Department of Health and UK Transplant.

Since the start of his medical career, Prof Yonan has contributed to clinical and basic sciences research, which he sees as a major vocational aspect of his clinical daily work. Research with major international impact includes the development of the bi-caval technique for heart transplantation, the transplant team are the first to design and use retrograde pulmonplegia in clinical transplantation and the use of pulmonary vein gas in assessment of individual donor lung. A more recent work including the development and advancement of the concept of tailoring immunosuppressive therapy that he enhanced by using therapeutic drug monitoring combined with the use of finger prick samples with postal delivery to simplify the process for the patients. This is used routinely for cyclosporine and tacrolimus as well as MPA.

Working with Professor Steen from Lund University, Sweden, Prof Yonan developed the concept of ex-vivo lung assessment for transplantation at UHSM and he is the first in the world outside Sweden to successfully use this technique to transplant rejected lungs successfully. Prof Yonan is a member of UKT advisory committee, national VAD forum, and helped developing national guidelines in heart and lung transplantation and temporary ventricular assist devices. He is the transplant and university representative at the north-west deanery training committee for CT surgery. He plays a very active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the University of Manchester. He is a trustee for the New Start charity.

Mark Jones is a senior surgeon who undertakes both cardiac and thoracic surgery. He trained as a medical student in Manchester, and then in cardiothoracic surgery in Manchester and London, Ontario, Canada. Since appointment as a consultant at UHSM in 1990 he has provided the full spectrum of adult cardiothoracic surgical services and has served on the executive committee of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in GB and Ireland. In addition to his cardiac surgical practice he has specialist interest and expertise in the surgical management of lung cancer and chest wall reconstruction. Tim Hooper is a senior surgeon in cardiac surgery. He trained in Manchester, London and Detroit, USA. Tim was initially appointed as Senior Lecturer in the University of Manchester as well as a consultant surgeon at UHSM, where he ran successful research programmes into lung transplantation and alternative treatments for heart failure. He is now a full time NHS surgeon with a particular interest in Mitral valve surgery (along with Ben Bridgewater) (ref mitral surgery audit). Tim’s cardiac surgery results are published here.

Paul Waterworth graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1988 and went on to become a trainee in cardiothoracic surgery at Harefield Hospital and the Hammersmith Hospital, London. He then moved to the Department of Surgery at the University of Cambridge where he was involved in full-time research. While in Cambridge he completed his MD in transplantation. Paul completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery and heart and lung transplanation at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge. He was appointed to the post of consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at UHSM in 2000. During his time as consultant, he has developed an interest in Thoracic Aortic Surgery, and a significant part of his work in now in this field. He is an active member of the heart and lung transplant programme. Paul has also been involved in the development of Risk Management at UHSM.
