  • Manage the cardiothoracic surgical waiting list in liaison with the cardiothoracic surgeons and associated professions and departments.
  • Produce a weekly operating schedule in conjunction with the theatre planning team.
  • Monitor cancelled operations and ensure patients are relisted and prioritised within timescales identified in contract quality specifications.

Thoracic surgery co-ordinator and multidisciplinary team for lung cancer co-ordinator

  • Monitor referrals to the thoracic surgeons from tertiary hospitals throughout the Northwest
  • Ensure patients are seen and treated within the National cancer waiting times and non-cancer patients are treated within the government waiting list times.
  • Co-ordinate the lung cancer meeting and compile notes, films, scans and any investigation results.
  • Relay the outcome of the meeting to patients where appropriate and to follow through organising any investigations that are required as a result of the meeting.

Thoracic Surgery Pre-admission Nurse

  • Co-ordinate the thoracic surgical pre-admission clinic.
  • Undertake pre-operative nursing assessments.
  • Organise appropriate pre-operative investigations and identify potential medical and discharge problems.
  • Liaise with ward staff, the thoracic surgical co-ordinator, secretaries, medical staff, lung specialist nurse and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to promote the smooth running of the thoracic surgical service.
  • Provide telephone advice and support to pre-operative patients.
