The UHSM RACRF is a partnership between the University of Manchester (UoM) and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Trust (UHSM). Our goal is to translate advances in laboratory and experimental research into improved lung health for individuals and the population as a whole.
The RACRF provides an infrastructure – people, space and equipment – which allows clinicians, scientists and researchers to undertake experimental research and early phase clinical trials (see the Research link on the left for more information).
The RACRF collaborates closely with the Medicines Evaluation Unit (MEU), a unique 36 bed clinical trials facility on UHSM site. This is by far the largest clinical trials unit for Early Phase Asthma and COPD studies in the UK. It is wholly owned by the North West Lung Centre Charity and supports respiratory research.
Both UHSM and the University of Manchester are founding members of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), a partnership aiming to become a leading centre nationally and globally for the uptake of innovative applied health research and education into healthcare.
The RACRF is led by Ashley Woodcock, Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Head of the School of Translational Medicine at UoM. Professor Woodcock is also a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at UHSM, where he is the Clinical Academic Lead.
