Research at UHSM

We are a centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research and development. This includes a strong University of Manchester research presence and research active Trust departments.

In 2008/09 we had 326 research projects in progress supported by over £7m in external funding from research councils, charities, UK Government, international funders and industry, including commercial research contracts to develop new medicines, devices and procedures.

With over 300 peer-reviewed papers published in 2008 research findings are informing local and national practice and policy.

The aim is to draw on our areas of clinical excellence and our strong research base to promote and implement research contributing to:

  • Improvements in patient care and the knowledge base
  • Fostering multidisciplinary working
  • Linking  with clinical and corporate governance
  • Informing the development of clinical standards
  • Aims to improve clinical services to patients and users

Our research and development strategy recognises the need to manage research, development and dissemination within the national and local frameworks of research and development policies and priorities.

We are committed to delivering a research agenda which is responsive to national guidance for clinical and cost-effectiveness and for systematic measures to monitor and improve quality.
