UHSM is a Centre of Excellence for Research and Development spanning across multiple medical disciplines. As a regional and national centre for specialist clinical services and a major teaching hospital, research and development underpin our philosophy.
Research is the cornerstone of first-class healthcare and is essential to help the NHS to understand which treatments and therapies work best for patients. Our research programmes influence advances in medical care on regional, national and international levels.
The Research and Development Centre at UHSM supports and facilitates researchers to carry out high quality research across the Trust’s range of specialities. Our mission is to provide research governance – an agreed way of conducting research that ensures the highest quality research and supports the interests of participating patients, our UHSM research colleagues, and the academics from The University of Manchester who have a strong presence in our research programmes. We work in partnership as part of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), that unites leading healthcare providers with world-class academics and researchers.
We have a responsibility to ensure that research conducted at University of South Manchester Hospitals Trust is compliant with the local and national regulatory framework. The Trust is committed to delivering a research agenda that is responsive to national guidance for clinical excellence, cost-effectiveness, and monitoring and improving quality.
Patient and public involvement
Patients are at the heart of everything we do here at UHSM. We are keen to promote Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) to keep patients informed about current Research here at UHSM. Find out how to get involved in our research studies.
The Trust has identified major themes for research focused on our clinical and academic strengths in Cancer, Cardiovascular, Gastroenterology, Medicines Management and Medical Education, Respiratory and Allergy, Wound Healing and Tissue Repair, and Burns and Plastics. We have grouped these specialist areas together to create five research hubs which support professionals to set up groundbreaking research studies, share expertise, learning, and best practice in research and development.
