The histopathology department also provide a service to Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Organisation. Our laboratories cover a population of 570,000 patients and receive around 4,500 samples every day.

The department comprises of four main specialities:
Biochemistry studies chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to disease, mostly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood or urine. Comprehensive 24-hour service, including clinical advice, to all clinical specialties within Health and Social Services and a routine service for local General Practitioners.
Cellular Pathology (Histology and Cytology) processes tissue samples, fluids and aspirates for microscopical diagnosis of disease. , Mortuary assists in determining the cause of death and looks after deceased patients.
Haematology provides a comprehensive clinical and analytical service to aid the diagnosis of many disorders including infection, anaemia, leukaemia, malignancy and bleeding disorders. Supports surgery, trauma, bleeding disorders and cancer therapy with blood, blood products and clinical advice.
Microbiology provides a wide range of tests for the diagnosis and management of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections.
Biochemistry
Our biochemistry services analyse patient blood, urine and other fluid samples. This is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as diabetes, lipid disorders and cystic fibrosis. For further information, please contact the Duty Biochemist on 0161 291 2136.
Cellular Pathology
Cellular Pathology examines a wide range of tissue samples. These include small samples taken for diagnostic purpose from a wide range of body sites. Larger specimens are tissues removed in theatre during operations. The material is processed to make glass slides which are examined under the microscope. After examining these, the pathologist sends a written report to the referring doctor. This process usually takes a number of days to complete.
If you would like to know what your tissue sample showed, please contact your doctor, as they will be able to put the findings in the full context of your medical condition. After tissues from patients have been examined, small amounts that have been processed are stored for future examination to inform the subsequent management of a patient’s condition.
For patients with cancers, a multidisciplinary team meeting attended by doctors, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists and specialist nurses, takes place to determine the best management for each patient.
The Cellular Pathology Department also runs the hospital mortuary. If you have suffered a bereavement, please contact the Bereavement Service for all matters arising from the death. The Bereavement Service will advise on the role of the Coroner in the investigations of deaths. If the Coroner orders an autopsy, this may require that tissue samples be taken for analysis. A member of the Coroner’s department will keep you informed and discuss your wishes as to eventual disposal.

Haematology
We provide a comprehensive clinical and analytical service to help the diagnosis of many disorders including infection, anaemia, leukaemia, malignancy and bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Tests include counting the number of red cells, white cells and platelets in the blood, looking at cells under the microscope, seeing how quickly the patient’s plasma forms a clot, blood grouping and the selection of blood for transfusion.
Haematology involves the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have disorders of the blood. The Haematology department at MFT looks after a wide range of malignant (cancerous) and non-malignant haematological conditions.
We have a comprehensive Haematology Department using the latest techniques to analyse blood and diagnose a wide range of conditions. The service is a Consultant led service with a small team of nurses meaning that the patients get to know all of the team involved in their care. Most care takes place on the haematology day unit.
The Consultants investigate and treat patients for chronic leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloproliferative disorders and myeloma. Non-malignant conditions treated include thrombosis, bleeding disorders and anaemias. There are specialist clinics for with Obstetrics and Respiratory for pulmonary emboli. We also run an Anticoagulation Clinic for patients on anticoagulant (blood clot preventing) treatment and those with blood clotting disorders and conditions with potential to cause clotting.
Tests we carry out include:

Blood Transfusion Laboratory
The Blood Transfusion laboratory supports surgery, trauma, maternity, bleeding disorders and cancer therapy with blood, blood products (any component of the blood which is collected from a donor for use in a blood transfusion) and clinical advice.
Anticoagulation Clinic
The Anticoagulation and Haematology Research Unit monitors patients on anticoagulants (e.g. blood clot preventing medication such as Warfarin) and carries out research in this area. If you have a first appointment at the clinic, please bring your anticoagulant yellow book and all current medicines.
Research
The haematology department has a wide range of clinical trials for both malignant and none-malignant blood disorder. Talk to your consultant about whether there is a trial suitable for you.
Patient referrals
Outpatient clinics take place on both Wythenshawe and Withington hospital sites. Our day case treatment unit is at Wythenshawe hospital. Patients are referred by GPs and hospital consultants.
